Tourist Police: Safety and peace of mind for every visitor

The tourism sector in Uzbekistan is developing rapidly, creating a growing need for additional services and infrastructure networks to support it. In response, and in line with the Presidential Decree of 18 July 2024, “On Additional Measures to Improve Tourism Infrastructure and Further Increase the Flow of Foreign Tourists,” the Department for Securing Safe Tourism was established under the Fergana Regional Internal Affairs Directorate.
“At present, our officers patrol locations most frequented by tourists —including historical and cultural sites, airports, bazaars, and hotels,” said Lieutenant Colonel Ulugbek Niyazov, Head of the Department for Securing Safe Tourism under the Fergana Regional Internal Affairs Directorate. “The main goal is to maintain public order, ensure safety, prevent violations, and protect the lives and health of tourists. What sets our department apart from others is that our officers not only maintain order but also establish friendly communication with tourists, offer necessary assistance, and provide quality service.”
All officers undergo special training and speak several foreign languages — primarily English, Turkish, and Russian. They are also trained in intercultural communication, the legal aspects of assisting foreign guests, and the provision of first aid.
Support for female travelers is also a key focus. Female officers within the department are always ready to provide legal, psychological, and medical assistance. In sensitive situations where a tourist prefers to speak with a woman, they are available to help.
In addition, every officer is trained to administer first aid and, when required, is capable of independently escorting tourists to the nearest medical facility.
This year alone, officers have worked around the clock at major events such as the Handicraft Festival in Kokand, the Pottery Forum in Rishton, and the International Makom Festival in Margilan. Currently, Tourist Police officers are also on 24/7 duty at the Fergana Peace Forum.
When visitors see officers wearing the Tourist Police insignia on the streets of Fergana, they feel reassured. Foreign tourists, in particular, greatly appreciate being addressed in their own language.“
Last month, during the International Handicraft Festival in Kokand, our officers assisted more than 30 foreign guests in various situations,” Niyazov added. “Many of them expressed their gratitude and promised to return to our country.”
Last year, Fergana Region hosted 10 international and 15 national events — a total of 65 major gatherings. This year’s number and scale of events are expected to be even higher.
Furthermore, the region plans to launch 125 tourism-related projects this year, creating nearly 3,500 new jobs.
