Uzbek scientists developed a tomato vaccine against coronavirus infection
A new-generation COVID-19 vaccine has been created by Uzbek scientists using genetic vectors and the tomato plant that can be consumed directly.
The scientists placed a fragment of the gene encoding the S1 protein of the coronavirus into special vectors and inserted it into the tomato cell genome. A tomato plant was obtained from these cells, that regularly produced the antigenic S1 protein. The tomato fruits from these plants were shown to synthesize stable antigenic S1 protein of SARS-COV-2 at 0.77 µg/g and were selected as the TOMAVAC vaccine.
Clinical trials of the TOMAVAC vaccine demonstrated the formation of antibodies (IgG) in blood serum and high levels of neutralizing antibodies (IgA) in the intestine in mice and human volunteers.
