Senate hosts meeting with OSCE Chairperson’s Special Representative on Gender Issues
On 26 November, Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, met with Saara-SofiaSirén, Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office on Gender.
At the meeting, officials outlined the systemic reforms underway in Uzbekistan aimed at promoting gender equality, protecting the rights and interests of women, and combating all forms of violence. The discussion touched on efforts to strengthen legislative and institutional frameworks, increase women’s participation in social and political life, and expand protection and rehabilitation services.
Saara - Sofia Sirén highly praised the gender policy being implemented in Uzbekistan. She particularly highlighted the importance of initiatives aimed at combating gender-based violence and strengthening women’s rights in the country.
Particular emphasis was placed on the role of women’s rehabilitation and adaptation centers operating across 14 regions of the country. The sides also underscored the importance of engaging civil society institutions, encouraging the active involvement of non-governmental organisations, and ensuring that men and boys are part of the gender-equality agenda.
The parties agreed to further deepen cooperation between Uzbekistan and the OSCE, including within the framework of the Dialogue of Women Leaders of Central Asian Countries. Plans also include expanding experience-sharing and coordinating best practices through bilateral platforms.
