Javokhir Sindarov becomes World Cup Champion
Chess is far more than the movement of pieces on a board — it is a battleground of willpower, deep strategic thinking, and relentless effort. When young, determined talents take to the stage, they become a source of immense pride for their nation. Today, 19-year-old Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has achieved such a historic milestone. He won the final of the 2025 FIDE World Cup held in Goa, India, becoming the new champion of the global chess arena.
In the final, Sindarov faced China’s Wei Yi in a decisive duel. Playing with the black pieces, he delivered confident and precise chess, defeating his opponent. With this victory, he secured the tournament’s top prize of USD 120,000. Most importantly, the win earned him direct qualification for the 2026 Candidates Tournament — one of the highest stages in world chess.
Sindarov’s success once again highlights the strength of Uzbekistan’s chess school. Notably, 21 years earlier, Rustam Kasimdzhanov also entered history by winning the World Cup. Today, Sindarov proudly continues this distinguished tradition.
The final was fierce from start to finish. In the first tiebreak game, Wei Yi made a serious mistake on move 30. However, due to the complexity of the position, Sindarov could not immediately find the only winning continuation, and the game ended in a draw. Yet in the deciding clash, he regained full control, exploited his opponent’s weaknesses, and claimed a determined victory.
This victory was no coincidence. Sindarov says he prepared by playing and analyzing chess for up to 20 hours a day. Such discipline and dedication became the true foundation of this success.
Victories like this demonstrate the results of Uzbekistan’s growing support for chess development. For a 19-year-old to stand out among the world’s top competitors is not only a major sporting achievement but also a reflection of the nation’s deep respect for knowledge, intellect, and analytical thinking.
Today, another child of our homeland has conquered one of the highest peaks of world chess. Sindarov’s triumph is not only his personal success — it is the pride, joy, and honor of the entire people of Uzbekistan. Now, even greater challenges await him: The Candidates Tournament and, ultimately, the battle for the World Chess Crown.
