New Sports Center Opens in Navoi
A new sports center was inaugurated in Navoi, providing state-of-the-art facilities for local youth to engage in boxing and other martial arts. The center, constructed with the sponsorship of local entrepreneur Temur Haydarov, was built for 5 billion UZS and designed to accommodate 250 young athletes at a time.
At the opening ceremony of the sports complex, the regional governor noted that the number of people involved in boxing in the area is growing daily and expressed hope that future athletes from the center will represent Uzbekistan by raising the national flag on international stages.
— This center, which meets all the requirements, is without a doubt a practical realization of the dreams of our sports-loving people, especially our youth, — said the governor. — We will, of course, bring in experienced sports coaches to this facility.
Boxing has become quite popular in Navoi. In the 1980s, boxing centers were operating in the Konimekh district, and more recently in the cities of Navoi and Zarafshan. However, due to instability in their operations, the region lost its standing in boxing. With the opening of a boxing school in Konimekh this past April, it is clear that efforts to re-popularize the sport in the region have truly begun.
