Overground metro to be built in Samarkand
At a meeting of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, the issue of modifying the borders of Samarkand city, as well as the Samarkand and Akdarya districts, was discussed. These changes aim to improve the architectural appearance of Samarkand city, expand its tourism potential, and accelerate the regionʼs economic development.
As part of the changes, 170 hectares from Samarkand district and 243 hectares from Akdarya district will now fall within Samarkand city limits. Officials highlighted that this expansion will enhance the cityʼs allure, attract both local and international investors, and stimulate tourism. Furthermore, modern business and financial infrastructure will be established in these areas.
Based on a decree by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the “Shirin” modern business center and residential complex will be developed from 2023 to 2030. The ambitious project includes 254 high-rise residential buildings, 19 business centers, 50 social facilities, and 89 retail and entertainment complexes. Additionally, a historical town will be built to enrich the cityʼs cultural heritage.
Within the scope of the new projects, 112 km of internal roads, bicycle and pedestrian lanes, a 6-kilometer overground metro line, two major bridges, and 7.2 kilometers of communication tunnels will be constructed. Additionally, 180 km of irrigation pipelines, 14 km of canals, and other water management structures will be built.
Deputies emphasized that the initiative will improve living standards, generate new jobs, and foster growth in production and services. Also, transport and communication networks in this area will be further modernized.
At the meeting, this draft resolution was approved and adopted by the deputies.
