New rice variety undergoing trials in Andijan
Saminjon HUSANOV from “Xalq sozi”. A new variety of rice is being tested at the "Ahilbek-Nodir" farm in Andijan district. What makes it significant?
"Typically, rice grows in water," says Khushnudbek Shakhobiddinov, chairman of the regional rice growers' association. "However, the new variety is being cultivated in moist soil furrows. As a result, water usage is reduced by two to two and a half times. The total cost for growing rice on one hectare is 1.5 million UZS. This brings the price of one kilogram of rice to 1,200 UZS. Additionally, this variety matures 10 days earlier than other types. This new method could lower production costs and reduce the price of rice for consumers.
Andijan rice growers aim to harvest 54,287 tons from 12,600 hectares this year. This figure is expected to rise further next year, with plans to boost productivity by introducing new rice varieties.
