An Important Area of Geology Reviewed
On May 13, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was briefed on plans to increase coal mining operations.
Various energy sources are being developed to address the increasing demands of the population and the economy. Specifically, coal remains the preferred energy source in certain industries. According to estimates, Uzbekistan’s coal reserves are almost 2 billion tons.
The reserves are gradually developing, and coal production volumes continue to grow consistently. Specifically, while the annual production was less than 4 million tons in 2016, it surged to 6.55 million tons by 2023.
Previously, the Head of state emphasized the importance of attracting investors to the fields and initiating new projects. Last year, there were shifts in attracting the private sector, resulting in the private sector contributing 369 thousand tons.
The presentation also outlined the industry's upcoming plans. It was highlighted that coal production is projected to reach 8 million tons this year, with entrepreneurs contributing 900 thousand tons. Moreover, a coal enrichment facility will be launched at JSC Shargunkumir, enabling an annual production capacity of 500 thousand tons of coal.
Geological surveys are being conducted on four sites in Surkhandarya, Kashkadarya, and the Tashkent region, with mining operations planned to begin next year.
Furthermore, using advanced foreign experience, work on assessing and drilling coal seams continues. These activities aim to increase coal production to 10 million tons by 2025.
Responsible parties have been instructed to implement international standards in the sector, improve coal quality, and accelerate investment projects.
