Uzbekistan has officially established diplomatic relations with Suriname, the Dunyo information agency reports. Suriname, located in Latin America, has become the 158th country to establish diplomatic ties with Uzbekistan. This significant step lays the foundation for developing cooperation between the two nations and fostering mutually beneficial relations in international affairs.

The joint communiqué on establishing diplomatic relations was signed in New York City on February 21, 2025. The document was signed by Ulugbek Lapasov, Uzbekistanʼs permanent representative to the United Nations, and Surinameʼs permanent representative, Sunil Algram Sitaldin, on behalf of their respective governments. This agreement is expected to elevate relations between the two states to a new level.

Representatives of both countries expressed their commitment to strengthen cooperation within international organizations, particularly the United Nations and its specialized agencies. This partnership will help reinforce their positions in the global arena and facilitate joint efforts to address international challenges.

Beyond diplomatic ties, Uzbekistan and Suriname have agreed to expand collaboration in political, trade-economic, and cultural-humanitarian sectors. Both parties expressed their intention to enhance bilateral relations in mutually beneficial areas and pursue joint projects to further economic and cultural ties.

In a related development, Uzbekistan established diplomatic relations with Somalia, an African nation, on February 5, 2025. Expanding international relations and strengthening friendly ties remain a priority direction in Uzbekistanʼs foreign policy.
