Samarkand to host $2.2 million chess tournament

For the first time in history, Uzbekistan will host one of the worldʼs most prestigious chess competitions, the FIDE Grand Swiss, in the ancient city of Samarkand. According to the official FIDE website, the tournament is scheduled for September 3–15, 2025.
The tournament carries dual significance: beyond featuring elite players, it serves as a crucial qualifying event for the prestigious Candidates Tournament, where contestants compete for the chess crown.
The FIDE Grand Swiss tournament will feature the worldʼs strongest chess players, with the top two finishers earning direct entry to the Candidates Tournament.
Uzbekistanʼs chess prominence continues to grow, highlighted by its successful bid to host the 2026 Chess Olympiad – one of the sportʼs most prestigious global events. The biennial competition, organized by FIDE, draws participants from more than 190 nations, making it one of the largest gatherings in international chess.
FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 in Samarkand will open new doors for Uzbekistan and chess players worldwide. Beyond its sporting significance, the prestigious tournament is expected to boost the regionʼs tourism sector.
The tournamentʼs prize fund is projected to range between $1 million and $2.2 million, with the final amount to be determined through potential tender processes.
Uzbekistanʼs proactive measures, government backing, and the rising success of its young chess talents signal its aspiration to solidify its status as a global chess powerhouse.
