A unique tourism destination is being developed in Surkhandarya Region. The Khojaikon salt mine area in Sherobod District is expected to become one of the most distinctive tourism sites not only in the region but also across the wider area in the coming years. Construction of a $50 million Health Tourism township has begun at the site by the Iranian company Kapa yurt salt taun LLC, in partnership with Germany’s Bizayla.

“The project will be implemented in stages between 2025 and 2035,” said Jurabek Turaev, Deputy Governor of Surkhandarya Region and Head of the Regional Tourism Department. “It will leverage the area’s unique natural potential to support modern tourism and economic development, while significantly increasing the flow of domestic and international visitors.”

The development includes a hotel complex capable of accommodating up to 500 guests simultaneously, as well as capsule-style housing with distinctive architectural design. Plans also envisage the construction of saltwater pools, salt baths, and wellness centres, along with an amphitheatre, a handicrafts center, and a salt museum. An artificial salt lake and landscaped green areas will provide visitors with a unique setting and a comfortable environment.

The project also includes comprehensive upgrades to local infrastructure, such as improvements to electricity supply, gas, internet access, and mobile communications, as well as a planned connection to the railway network. In addition, the Tohirshoh Ota mausoleum will be renovated to create appropriate conditions for pilgrims.

To date, investors have financed the construction of more than 20 capsule houses. Once fully operational, the complex is expected to attract an average of 200,000 local and foreign tourists annually and create over 250 new jobs. Preparatory work is also underway to grant Chorbog mahalla, where the salt mine is located, the status of a “Tourism Village.” In the future, it is expected to become one most visited destinations for medical, eco, and pilgrimage tourism in the oasis.

The site, notable for its layers of white and red salt, is also set to host modern facilities for salt extraction, processing, and packaging using advanced technologies. High-quality table salt will be produced under  UZSALT brand, with part of the output intended for export. Plans also include the production of various souvenirs made from natural salt crystals.
