Construction of a $150 million waste-to-energy plant launched in Namangan
For years, Namangan has faced serious waste-management challenges due to the absence of a long-term landfill and the frequent relocation of existing sites. The eco-industrial zone now being developed in the Zarafshon mahalla (neighborhood) of Chust district is expected to offer a sustainable solution.
Of the 15 hectares allocated for the site, 10 hectares will be used for the project “Electricity Generation Through Waste Incineration,” worth $150 million, which is being implemented by Everbright Environmental Energy Namangan LLC in cooperation with Chinese investors.
The first phase of the plant is scheduled to become operational next year, with full commissioning planned for 2027. The new facility will have high capacity: it will process 547,500 tons of waste annually and generate 310 million kWh of electricity. Of this amount, 254 million kWh will be supplied to the power grid - roughly equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 300,000 people.
“Once the project is implemented, it will create the capacity to collect and fully process an average of 1,450 tons of waste per day, or 529,300 tons per year,” said Kobiljon Mirakhmedov, Deputy Head of the Regional Department for Ecology and Climate Change. “At the initial stage, waste transported from six districts will be delivered to the reloading station in Turakurgan district, sorted, and then brought to this plant. Once full capacity is reached, the entire region will be integrated into this system.”
The project, which is expected to significantly improve the ecological situation in Namangan region, was officially launched yesterday.
