Uzbekistan is conducting extensive, targeted scientific research to develop high-yield, disease-resistant melon varieties and F1 hybrids suitable for greenhouse cultivation. The Ministry of Agricultureʼs press service reported the developments.

According to the report, the research has been professionally organized by scientists at the Scientific Research Institute of Vegetables, Melons, and Potato Farming. The breeding work employs modern approaches, in-depth analysis, and innovative methods.

As part of the study, more than 30 local and international genetic collections, along with nearly 10 breeding lines and hybrids, are being examined. The most promising specimens—selected for their climate adaptability, yield, and marketability—are used as the foundation for developing new melon varieties.

It is noted that greenhouse cultivation of melons not only ensures more efficient use of land but also makes it possible to double yields. A single hectare can accommodate over 10,000 to 12,000 seedlings, allowing for harvests of up to 60 tonnes of high-quality melons per hectare.

When agrotechnical measures—such as irrigation, fertilization, and disease prevention—are implemented effectively and on time, both the quality and quantity of the produce can be further improved. The main goal of this research is to supply the population with flavorful and nutritious melons outside the traditional growing season.

Early melon harvests grown in greenhouses are competitive in the domestic market and have strong export potential. This is helping transform melon farming into a high-income, innovative, and sustainable sector.

The research being carried out at the Institute contributes not only to the creation of new, high-quality melon varieties but also to the broader development of Uzbekistanʼs agricultural potential.
